Auxiliary:
The Edward John Noble Hospital Auxiliary is presently made up of 352 men and women, ranging from teenagers through nonagenarians. The management of the group is a Board of Directors consisting of six officers and ten Chairmen of standing committees. The present Auxiliary was formed in 1950 in conjunction with the opening of the new hospital. The forerunner of the organization was the VanDuzee Hospital Auxiliary, which was disbanded during the fund-raising drive for construction of the new facility.
Our fund-raising efforts, which include our annual dance, holiday sale, summer antiques in the park, various lobby sales and vending machines, allow us to donate an average of $40,000 per year to the two facilities.
Our volunteers serve within the hospital as patient transport volunteers - a name which covers many duties performed by non-medical personnel - thus giving the staff more time for actual nursing duties. Another group handles the television service to patients, collecting the rental each day. The Auxiliary purchases and maintains the TV sets in use in the hospital. Still other volunteers assist in the nursing home with various activities involving the patients.
The Auxiliary, under the leadership of our Nursing Home In-Service Chairman is currently organizing a group to be called "Friends and Family of Kinney Nursing Home". The goal of this group is to provide one-on-one stimulation for those who would benefit most. Initial hours are to be 9 to 11 AM. However volunteers are welcome to come in earlier or later if those hours would be more beneficial to the patient.
One of our past presidents is completing three 3-yr terms on the Committee on Healthcare Auxiliaries, a subsidiary of HANYS (Healthcare Association Of New York State). Two other past-presidents served on this committee and one went on to serve as Chairman of the state committee, which includes members from the entire state, and works to provide leadership to auxiliaries in both the advocacy and education fields.
Membership is open to any area residents, male or female, with the present dues as follows: One year-$3.00, two years-$5.00 or lifetime membership-$35.00. While joining the auxiliary does not require a commitment to act as a volunteer, we are always looking for new members with fresh ideas and new outlooks. As an added benefit working on the various events can be a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. We are proud to have a group of enthusiastic and uplifting people with whom to work. Volunteering CAN be fun.
